Past to Present: How My Creative Adventure Began

Shea Charlish from Skeleton Coast Jewellery with two Zulu women

Growing up my childhood was anything but normal. At the time I didn’t know it, but looking back I can see my birthplace shaped my view on the world. Despite the dangers, it was the most inspiring and magical place to grow up in - and for that, I’m grateful. To me, Africa is a feeling…something that can’t be explained or defined, it has to be felt and experienced. Surrounded by this rich tapestry of cultures and traditions, I was always fascinated by the way they connected people to their past and their present.

Driving through South Africa a common sight along with sides of the road is local artisans selling ‘curios’. These pieces of art always intrigued me. They’re crafted from wood, bone, beads and wire with such dedication and skill using only the most basic tools. I have many treasured pieces from these roadside stalls, my favourite of which are Zulu beads. Little did I know this colourful beaded jewellery would be the catalyst for a lifetime passion for jewellery and adornment.

Skeleton Coast Jewellery started with a dream - a dream to connect people like you through jewellery to the raw, majestic beauty of Africa and other enchanting places around the world. My signature pieces are crafted from ethically sourced materials, and each piece is designed to be unique, just like the places that inspired them. To me, they are a work of art, crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail, and infused with the spirit of adventure and wonder that defines the Skeleton Coast Jewellery brand.
